Can you go to jail for defending someone else?

My friend is a boy and I'm not sure but I think he's a pacifist and I'm not certain but I heard that some guy might jump him soon. So, if I jump in for him, and do some damage (it may not look like it but yeah I can fight) will I go to jail if I was defending someone?
